One of the best feeling in the world is when you hug someone you love, and they hug you back even tighter.

There are many reasons why our family hugs!

We hug as we love

We hug as we care

We hug as we comfort

We hug as we rejoice

We hug as we fear

But, it really didn't cross my mind that hugging actually brings lots of physical and psychological benefits to a baby 

According to a survey conducted by Huggies Singapore, one of the leading diaper brands, 99.4% of 1,560 young parents agree that physical bonding with their children is essential to their child's overall development. In fact, the benefits of human touch extends through children, and can impact a child's cognitive and emotional development! 

Like Huggies, I'm a firm believer of the power of hugs and its vital role in the healthy development of babies.

The Power of Hugs

1. Physiological stability

Hugging facilitates a baby's heart rate, improves oxygen level and regulate temperature.

2. Improved sleep

Hugging promotes and regulates a baby's sleep.

3. Promote weight gain

It's interesting to learn that hugging helps promote weight gain especially for pre-term and low weight infants.

4. Stronger parent/baby attachment

Physical touch activates the brain's orbitofrontal cortex, linked to feelings of rewards of compassion. 

5. Improved brain development

Babies who hugged developed a larger hippocampus, the brain region associated with learning, memory and stress response. Improved memory and problem solving skill.

6. Less anxiety and stress

Hugging induces oxytocin, aka bonding hormone, that is also known to reduce stress and lower cortisol levels.

7. Improved social skills

Babies feel secure and cared for with hugs and this contributes to their development to be socially well-adjusted.

Hugging do not just benefits the babies, parents get to enjoy better bonding with our babies, reduced stress and better mental health from hugging our babies too!

Looks like we definitely need to hug more than we do now!

In our time-starved and technology driven world, most parents hug their baby most often only when they are comforting, feeding or putting their child to bed. With so much benefits to hugging, why not spend a little more time cuddling together?

By uploading a photo of them hugging their child (0-5 year old) on Huggies Singapaore Facebook page and tagging three other daddy/mommy friends with #HuggiesShareAHug, Huggies will contribute a diaper to a family in need. With 5,000 hugging photos, Huggies will double the number of diapers donated.

Beneficiaries for this campaign include:
